Football Picks – Winning Is not Every Thing, It's the Only Thing

Whether you prefer professional football picks or college football picks, betting on the outcome of gridiron events adds excitement to the game and money to your pocket, if you get the right right. Most of the action takes place on weekends, so you have an entire week to get ready with your football picks.

The National Football League (NFL) is comprised of 32 teams. They play a 16-game regular season running September through December. It is preceded by 4-5 preseason match-ups and followed by a single-elimination post-season play to decide two conference champions, who then vie for the NFL's Super Bowl title in February.

More bets are placed on the Super Bowl game than any other annual sporting event. Thanks to a variety of side wagers offered known as proposals, or "props" for short, you have many more sports picks to choose from for this game. It may surprise you, however, that most sharps (professional handicappers) back off their wagering on this event. The reason: So many squares (recreational bettors) get in on the action, it throws the odds off.

Instead, sharps treat this as just one last game in a long season. They prefer to earn their profits on NFL picks week by week, and so should you. Look for teams that are rebounding from a big loss to play well the following week. Even if they are slumping, they often cover the spread.

Also look for teams with good defenses to cover the spread, even against teams with high-powered offsets. These are good picks. Watch for teams on winning streaks to continue winning after a loss, and slashing teams to return to their losing ways after a win. These are good NFL picks, too. And new coaches often fare poorly on the road. Your professional football picks must take into account all factors.

The rules of collegiate football differ only slightly from those of the pros, but your college football picks will be affected by a number of additional factors. For one thing, there are so many more football picks to choose from. NCAA Division IA football is comprised of 119 teams. There are another 119 teams in Division II-A. Will you limit your college football picks to the top schools, a few conferences or a single region? So much information is available that you really need to have some filters.

Intrastate rivalries play a big role at the college level. Expect teams that lost last year to be bringing their best game this season, especially if playing at home. These make great NCAA football picks. Also, keep an eye out for off-the-field events, such as player scandals, recruiting violations and academic issues that could affect on-the-field play.

Another difference between professional football picks and college football picks is the way champions are decided. In college, roughly half of the teams in Division IA get invited to special "bowl games" at the end of the season. Based upon computer rankings, the two top-rated teams play for the national championship at one of the big four bowls: the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl and Fiesta Bowl. Betting on bowl games can be quite lucrative, if you get your NCAA football picks right.

It pays to remember that these picks are not carved in stone. Between the time the line opens and the game begins, a lot can occur. Players get hurt or benched. Weather turns nasty. And squares bet heavily on one team or another, causing a shift in the spread or money line. You should time your bets to take full advantage of last minute information. Be ready to flip your picks if need be.

Falcons History – Full of Great Memories For Fans

Atlanta Falcons history shows that they are one of the youngger teams in the NFL considering they were added in 1966 as an expansion team. The NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle granted ownership of the team to Rankin Smith, Sr. They were awarded first pick in the NFL draft that year, and also final pick in each round. They ended up picking Tommy Nobis first, which made him the very first player in Atlanta Falcon history. They actually won their first away game versus the New York Giants in the 60s. By the end of the decade, the team had won 12 games total in their four years. Throughout this same time period, they also changed from the Eastern Conference to the Western Conference, and then became a part of the Coastal Division of the Western Conference.

In 1970, the Atlanta Falcons football team was moved and became a part of the NFC Western division. They remained there for about 31 years, becoming part of the NFC South in 2002. 1971 was the first winning season for the young Falcons. In 1978, the Falcons made the plays. They recorded a win in the Wild Card game against the Eagles, then played the division game against the Cowboys. They made the plays again in 1980 and 1982, and after the 1982 coach Leeman Bennett was fired. After this, it was almost 10 years before they saw another play game, when they played the in Division game in 1991.

The Atlanta Falcons history for winning championships includes 1995, 1998, 2002, 2004, and 2008, and made an appearance in Super Bowl XXXIII. The Atlanta Falcons history of losses includes a 22-loss streak for away games in cold-weather cities. In 1998, they won against the New England Patriots during a road game, which broke the 16 year streak of losses in colder destinations. Former Broncos coach Dan Reeves led them to a loss in the Super Bowl that year, ironically against the Denver Broncos.

In 2001, the Atlanta Falcons history shows that they became even stronger with the acquisition of Michael Vick and LaDanian Tomlinson. Vick the starting quarterback in 2002, led the team to the playoffs that year. In 2003, Vick suffered a broken leg, causing him to miss 12 games. 2003 was a tough year, leaving the Atlanta Falcons with a 5-11 record.

They returned to the playoffs in 2004 to play the Eagles again. 2005 kept the on-again, off-again championship visits going with an 8-8 season. The team had a shot in 2006 until the Giants beat the Redskins, knocking the Falcons out of the running for the playoffs. The Atlanta Falcons history in 2007 was controversial and news ridden. 2007 created a much more socially volatile time for the team, when Michael Vick was convicted of dog fighting. He then received a sentence of 23 months, forcing the Atlanta Falcons to replace him with Joey Harrington. That season, Bobby Petrino resigned as coach, leaving Emmitt Thomas, a secondary coach, in command for the last three games of that season.

In 2008, the team found a new general manager in Thomas Dimitroff, and Mike Smith was the new head coach. Turner signed on for a $ 30 million six-year deal toward the end of that year. They could clinch the wildcard spot that year, but lost in the first round to the Arizona Cardinals. The Atlanta Falcons history of players in the Hall of Fame includes two members, and has a competent of retired numbers. Talk of a new stadium for the Atlanta Falcons on the old General Motors plant site at the end of 2008. The stadium is planned to use 90 acres of the space, and is highly desired by owner Arthur Blank. He suggests that a new stadium would increase their ability to attract fans, and also the ability to host Super Bowl games.

Atlanta Falcons history has produced some great games and memories for Atlanta Falcons fans. Falcons are a force to be reckoned with, especially when you consider names like Ryan and Gonzalez.

College Football – Florida, Oklahoma, USC, Virginia Tech, East Carolina and Buffalo Win Titles

It was the biggest game of college football regular season play, No. 1. 1 and unbeaten Alabama (12-0) versus No. 1. 2 Florida (11-1) at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta for the Southeastern Conference Championship and the right to play in the BCS National Championship Game.

When it mattered the most, the Florida Gators-led by junior quarterback and last year's Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow-showed up. Tebow was 0-5 in games when his Gators trailed in the second half, but he overcame that statistic Saturday (12-6-08) by throwing the last of his 3 touchdown passes with less than 3 minutes remaining to seal Florida's 31-20 victory.

After trailing in the second half, Florida did win the first half 17-10 and also won the second half 14-10. Tebow was 14-of-22 passing for 216 yards and led his team in rushing with another 57 yards. When Florida needed a play the most, Tebow played a big role in making it happen.

The win wave Florida another SEC title under coach Urban Meyer and its second trip in three years to the BCS National Championship Game. The Gators routed Ohio State for the national championship in 2006. Florida will now face No. 4 Oklahoma for the BCS national title in Miami (FL).

Oklahoma staked its claim to face Florida by dusting off No. 1. 19 Missouri, 62-21, for the Big 12 Championship. All you need to know about this game is that it was 38-7 at the half.

The 4 teams in contention for the BCS game during the final two weeks of the season were Alabama, Florida, Texas and Oklahoma. All had one loss except Alabama. Florida, which historically prevailed over Alabama, had lost at home to Ole Miss 31-30 in its 4th game of the season, and then rattled off 8 wins in a-row by huge margins before ruining Alabama's run for the national title.

Oklahoma had lost at home to Texas 45-35 in its 6th game, and then routed 6 teams before its big win over Missouri. The Sooners scored 60+ points in their last 5 wins.

The Texas Longhorns won 8 straight before losing on the road to Texas Tech, 39-33. After winning their last 3, they needed Oklahoma to lose to Missouri to have any chance at a title shot.

Elsewhere, No. 12 and unbeaten Ball State (12-0) joined Alabama by losing its first game in the Mid American Conference Championship as Turner Gill's 7-5 Buffalo team took down the Cardinals, 42-24, for the title. In just 3 years, coach Turner Gill has turned around a Buffalo program that was one of the worst in America.

East Carolina (8-4) hung on and hung tough in beating Tulsa (10-2) in the Conference USA Championship game, 27-24. Coach Skip Holtz won 3 games, including victories over Virginia Tech and West Virginia, lost 3 games and then won 5 of his last 6 before beat Tulsa for the title.

Virginia Tech (8-4) went on to capture the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship by beating No. 18 Boston College (8-4), 30-12. Not to be outdone, Southern Cal kept UCLA at bay on the road, 28-7, to win its 7th straight Pac 10 Championship and 4th straight BCS bowl appearance.

With Alabama and Ball State losing their first game, only No. 7 Utah at 12-0 and No. 9 Boise State at 12-0 remained unbeaten among the 119 Division 1-A schools.

In other action, it was No. 19 Pittsburgh on the road over Connecticut 34-10, California at home horsewhipped the winless 0-12 Washington Huskies 48-7, Navy shut out Army 34-zip, Arizona ripped Arizona State 31-10, and No. 13 Cincinnati on the road outlasted Hawaii 29-24.

So it's Florida and Oklahoma in the BCS National Championship Game, and the other 4 BCS Bowl Games will find Penn State and Southern Cal in the Rose Bowl, Ohio State and Texas in the Fiesta Bowl, Utah and Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, and Cincinnati and Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl.

The 49ers Joe Montana And Steve Young Share Their Love Of The Atlanta Falcons

The San Francisco 49ers of the 1980's and early to mid 1990's were one of the best teams the National Football League has ever seen. They won division titles, conference championships, and of course multiple Super Bowls. They did all this thanks to great ownership, excellent coaches, and some of the most talented and smart football players in the league.

Two main reasons that the 49ers were so successful during this time were the amazing quarterbacks that they had. Joe Montana led the team throughout the 1980's and into the new decade before the team turned the offense over to the very capable hands of Steve Young. The 49ers dominated a number of teams through this era, but there is one interesting fact relating to Montana and Young and the touchdown passages that thread during their career.

Over the course of his career, including both his time with San Francisco and his time at the end with Kansas City, Joe Montana threw more touchdown passages against the Atlanta Falcons, a total of 38, than he did against any other team. Steve Young began his career in Tampa Bay, following his time in the USFL, before ever joining the 49ers. Over the course of his career, he thread 37 touchdown passes against the Falcons which is also more than he would throw against any other team.

Joe Montana and Steve Young were great quarterbacks for the San Francisco 49ers. They both helped their team excel and achieved things that many 49ers fans had not although possible just a few years before the 1980's came along. They shared a lot of things in common, and one of those was the success they had against the Atlanta Falcons.

NFL Football Trivia

he NFL has become one of America's favorite sports. We all wait with anticipation for fall to arrive, because with fall comes NFL football, when we can relax on Sunday afternoon and watch our favorite football teams battle it out in the hunt for the playoffs, and if all goes well, the Super Bowl. This following list will describe everything you need to know about NFL football trivia.

Ten facts about NFL football trivia:

1. Walter Camp wrote the first rules for American football in 1876. It was not until many years later that he became known as the father of American football.

2. In 1920, the Chicago Cardinals organization, later to become the Arizona Cardinals, was formed. A year later the Green Bay Packers organization was formed, bought by Curly Lambeau. These two teams are the oldest teams currently in existence in the NFL.

3. The biggest point margin for a win in NFL history was in the 1940 championship game between the Chicago Bears and the Washington Redskins. The Bears mauled the Redskins, beating them 73-0.

4. The AFL and NFL merged on June 8th, 1966.

5. On January 15th, 1967, the Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10 to become the first team to win the newly formed Super Bowl.

6. The Miami Dolphins defeated the Washington Redskins 14-7 on January 14, 1973, to become the first and only team to have a perfect season. The New England Patriots are the only other NFL team to ever come that close. They had a perfect season all the way to the Super Bowl in 2008, but historically lost to the New York Giants.

7. Through the years, there have always been certain teams that defined the decision, becoming a dynasty in their own right. During the 60's, it was the Green Bay Packers. The 70's welcomed the Pittsburgh Steelers, with four Super Bowl wins. The 80's belonged to the San Francisco 49ers and the 90's to the Dallas Cowboys. Nothing's officially been said yet, but it sees that the New England Patriots will become the dynasty of the 2000's.

8. There are currently 32 NFL teams, divided into eight divisions and, furthermore, into two conferences, the AFC and the NFC.

9. There are sixteen games in a season, played over seventeen weeks, with every team having a bye week sometime during the season.

10. The four division winners from each conference automatically go to the playoffs, with each conference having two wild card spots for the two teams with the best record that did not make it to the playoffs. The twelve teams that make it to the playoffs begin by facing off against one another until a team is eliminated. This process of elimination continues to dwindle until their two teams left, the victors of the AFC and NFC championship games. It is then that the Super Bowl is played between the two conference winners.

This concludes NFL football trivia.

Johnny Manziel’s self-imposed deadline to sign with CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats passed Wednesday without agreement

Johnny Manziel’s self-imposed deadline to sign with the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats passed Wednesday without an agreement.

The Tiger-Cats issued a statement that left open the possibility for future negotiations.

“While the discussions with Johnny Manziel and his representative have been very cordial and informative,” the statement read, “there is nothing imminent and nothing to report. We will continue to do our due diligence and will have no further public comment on the matter as we move forward.”

The Tiger-Cats hold the CFL’s exclusive negotiating rights for Manziel, who hasn’t played in a game since Dec. 27, 2015. In a statement earlier this month, agent Erik Burkhart said he would give the Tiger-Cats until Jan. 31 to offer a deal that paid Manziel what other Hamilton quarterbacks have received in recent years. Their most recent starter, Zach Collaros, earned about $500,000 in 2017.

“If we cannot reach a deal with Hamilton by this date,” Burkhart said in that statement, “we will turn our focus to several other professional options readily available to us.”

Manziel appeared to dispute on Twitter a TSN report that described the sides as far apart in negotiations.
